Info and FAQ's

BJJ Tournaments

  • Why SGT (Submission Grappling Tournament)?

Several reasons -

  1. I believe in showing respect to my instructor (Adam Metcalf) and this is my instructor's tournament. He in turn, shows respect to his instructor: John Will and ultimately Rigan Machado.

  2. You will get several bouts on the one day. With a trip to and from Perth on the line, this is the best chance to get several bouts in the one weekend.

  3. It's really well organised with attention being paid to safety, rules and fairness to each competitor.

  • Costs

Cost for having the extra preparation sessions at MRMA is Nil. Part of our membership.

Cost for competing depends on the organisation.  As at the time of writing the fees for registering ranged between $47.50 to $77.50.

  • Location

SGT (Submission Grappling Tournaments) are generally held at HBF Stadium Mount Claremont, (directions) although depending on a variety of reasons, this can change.

  • How do I register?

By the website - https://smoothcomp.com/en/event/4382 (this is the old link - new one coming soon)

Note that registration is usually due a week beforehand. For example, for the March 7th 2021 competition, registrations were due by 6.30pm on the 3rd of March

FAQ's:

  1. What/when are the time commitments here or Perth? Judging by the websites mentioned on this page, and by past experience, it can last all day. However your bouts usually are over within a period of a few hours. When those hours will be depends on the draw made final in the week prior to the event.

  2. Can they be involved in some rather than all? There are two choices. Gi and No Gi. This is a personal choice and is made when you register online through SmoothComp.

  3. Is there a chance we compete against people from our own dojo? Yes. If you go to the SGT website you can look at who is enrolled in your division at that point in time.

  4. Which clubs are competing? variety of clubs are either in the Machado system or invited to compete in these tournamentsThey all agree to follow the rules of the SGT tournaments.

  5. What belt will they wear as their belts are in MMA? Generally, all students below the age of 16 are considered white belts. This is because to hold a blue belt (the first belt in BJJ) you must be at least 16. Having said that, promoters do their best to group students of similar skill together.

  6. What are the brackets? See the Smoothcomp and SGT website.

  7. Are the rounds 3 or 5 mins? Kids 3 to 5 Years Old - 3 Minutes, Kids 6 to 14 Years Old - 4 Minutes, Juvenile to Adults (Masters Inc) - 5 minutes.

  8. What are the rules? All bouts are a standing startRules are the modified AFBJJ submission rules. Details are here - https://www.sgt.org.au/rules

  9. Is there insurance? Insurance is organised by the Competition Promoter. Also, if this worries you, please raise this directly with the promoter.

  10. Do they need membership to IFBJJ? No.

  11. What do I wear? For Gi competitions bring your Gi (white) and a white belt (otherwise your normal MRMA belt is fine). For No Gi you will need a rash vest and MMA type shorts (no Gi pants). If you don't have a pair of our club MMA shorts there are many available online. You will also need a mouthguard for all bouts.
